Grounding Crystals for Times of Change

Autumn Equinox Reflections

As the days slowly shorten and the air begins to cool, autumn invites us into a quieter rhythm. The Autumn Equinox is a moment of balance — when day and night briefly hold equal space — reminding us that life naturally moves through cycles of growth, change, and rest.

During times of transition, many people find comfort in grounding practices. Walking in nature, slowing down our routines, and reconnecting with what feels steady can help us navigate change with a little more ease.

Crystals are often used in a similar way — not as something magical or separate from us, but as gentle reminders to return to balance and stability.

Four stones that are often associated with grounding energy are Shungite, Obsidian, Black Tourmaline and Smoky Quartz.

Shungite — Deep Grounding and Protection

Shungite is known for its strong grounding energy and its association with protection. Many people are drawn to shungite when they feel overwhelmed or when life seems particularly busy or chaotic.

Its dark, earthy presence can serve as a reminder to slow down, reconnect with the body, and return to a sense of steadiness.

Wearing shungite jewellery can feel like carrying a small anchor — something that quietly encourages calm and resilience throughout the day.

Shungite is also widely spoken about for its protective qualities, particularly in relation to modern technology. Some people like to keep shungite nearby or wear it as jewellery as a for energetic protection from the constant presence of phones, computers, and other electronic devices.

Obsidian — Clarity and Emotional Strength

Obsidian is a volcanic glass formed through intense natural forces, which is why it is often linked with emotional clarity and strength.

People sometimes turn to obsidian when they are ready to reflect more deeply on their experiences or release what no longer serves them.

During seasonal transitions like autumn, obsidian can symbolise the courage to look inward while remaining grounded and supported.

Black Tourmaline — Grounded Protection and Stability

Black tourmaline is one of the most widely recognised grounding stones, often associated with protection and energetic stability.

Many people are drawn to black tourmaline when they want to feel more anchored, particularly during times of change or emotional overwhelm. Its steady, earthy energy is often described as helping to absorb or deflect unwanted influences, creating a sense of calm and security.

Like shungite, black tourmaline is sometimes kept nearby or worn as jewellery as a way of feeling supported in environments filled with modern technology. Whether used intentionally or simply appreciated for its presence, it offers a quiet reminder to stay grounded and centred.

Smoky Quartz — Stability and Calm

Smoky quartz is widely appreciated for its gentle grounding qualities. Its soft, smoky tones reflect the quiet stillness that often accompanies the cooler months.

This stone is often associated with releasing tension and finding calm during uncertain or changing periods.

Smoky quartz encourages patience and steadiness — qualities that help us move through change with greater balance.

Returning to Balance

The Autumn Equinox reminds us that balance is not something we achieve once and hold forever. It is something we return to again and again.

Whether through quiet reflection, time in nature, or meaningful objects we wear and carry, small rituals can help us stay connected to ourselves as the seasons shift.

Grounding stones like shungite, obsidian, and smoky quartz offer gentle reminders to slow down, breathe deeply, and trust the natural rhythms of life.

A Quiet Invitation

If you feel drawn to grounding stones during this season, you may enjoy exploring some of the pieces I’ve created using crystals such as shungite, obsidian, black tourmaline and smoky quartz.

Each necklace is made slowly and intentionally, allowing the natural beauty of the stone to speak for itself.

Sometimes the crystal we feel drawn to is already the one we need.
